Notes: This is a fanfiction based on characters from the TV shows, Grey’s Anatomy, and Private Practice. This rewrites parts of episodes 18×03 and 18×04 of Grey’s Anatomy where Addison comes back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to do the hospital’s first uterine transplant. In this version of events, Addison’s husband and son, Jake, and Henry, show up to visit. This story and chapter were originally posted on Archive of Our Own on October 18th, 2021. This is chapter three so it is necessary to read the second chapter before moving on. This story has been edited to include headings and images.
Happier: Chapter 3
Later in the day, Addison bumps into Meredith after exiting Tovah’s room.
“Dr. Grey,” Addison said, acknowledging the blonde.
“Dr. Montgomery,” Meredith said. “How’s your patient doing?”
“So far so good. But I know we’re all just anxiously waiting to see if this uterus will take,” Addison said back, smiling.
“Well, I’m sure it will. The surgery went great, and from what I’ve heard, everything’s going according to plan so far,” Meredith said optimistically.
“Yes, well, time will tell,” Addison said back, chuckling.
Addison Spots Amelia
It was then that Amelia came around the corner. And surprisingly, she wasn’t alone. Turns out Henry and Jake had had enough of the Seattle sites for one day and Henry just wanted to see his mom in action. And Henry was someone Amelia just couldn’t say no to.
“Mom!” Henry shouted. Addison knelt down, embracing her son once again.
“What are you doing here?” She kissed his forehead before letting him go.
“Someone wanted to see you in action. And I couldn’t help but say no because I’m pretty curious about how your patient’s doing too,” Jake answered for him.
“She’s okay. She’s alive, so that’s a good sign. But you and I both know that we’ll have to wait to see if she’ll reject the uterus,” Addison said, still a little anxious about the trial.
“She won’t,” Meredith said, looking up from her tablet, which she had been typing away on as Addison’s family reunited. Addison looked over at Meredith with a sympathetic smile. So much of their past relationship had been fraught over one man. As much she missed Derek, or as much as they both missed him, it was at least nice that there was no longer any tension between the two women.
“Dr. Grey,” Addison started. “Since I got to meet your kids, I think it’s only fair you meet mine,” she smiled. “This is Henry,” Addison pulled Henry closer to the blonde.
Meredith Meets Henry
“Who are you?” Henry looked up at Meredith.
“Uhhh…” Addison glanced at both Meredith and Henry. “This is Meredith. She’s…” Addison struggled to find the words at first. “She’s an old friend of mine,” Addison said, smiling. Again, their relationship had always had this tension between them, but she was proud of the fact that they never really hated each other. They hated that the other got in the way when it came to Derek, but they never blamed each other for any of it.
“Hi Henry,” Meredith said. “It’s nice to meet you,” Meredith reached her hand out after seeing Henry reach his small hand out first. She, like every other adult Henry had met today, was impressed by his manners.
“And I’m Jake,” Jake said, reaching out a hand as well.
“Also known as my husband,” Addison chuckled. It didn’t matter that it’d been almost eight years. She still loved calling him her husband.
“It’s nice to meet you, Dr. Grey,” Jake said as Meredith returned the handshake. “You have a very impressive resume, as I hear,”
“Oh, thank you,” Meredith said, genuinely surprised and flattered. It was nice to know that Addison had talked about her at some point. Plus, it didn’t really matter how many times she got complimented. It was still nice every time.
“I see where you get manners now,” Meredith said, chuckling and looking back at Henry, who smiled back. Jake was his biggest role model so to know that he was even a little like him made him happy.
Henry Talks About His Day
“Did you guys even go anywhere or did you just hang out here?” Amelia chimed in.
“We saw the whole city,” Henry said, proudly.
“Yeah, and how’d you do that?” Amelia said, curiously.
“We went up the Space Needle,” Jake answered, as he simultaneously reminded Henry of the name of the building they went up, knowing he’d forgotten.
“And how was that?” Addison looked up to see Jake smiling at them.
“It was pretty! There’s a lot of buildings but not as many as at home. And it’s not as blue.” Henry said excitedly. It was nice to see Henry and Jake fitting into a place Addison used to call home. Even if it was only for a short time. Plus, Addison was always amazed at how Henry described things. To see things from his eyes. She would’ve never thought to describe LA as “blue”, but the more she thought about it, the more it made sense. There were, after all, plenty of beaches.
As Jake stepped closer to Addison, he wrapped his arm around her waist and gave her a sweet peck on the cheek as Addison’s smile beamed bigger. As they watched the sweet family reunite again, Meredith and Amelia stepped aside to give them some room.
“So what now?” Henry looked up at his parents.
“I don’t know, you tell me, little man,” Jake said, as they both looked down at him. Just then, Addison’s pager beeped as she was getting paged to the OB floor.
Addison Goes Back to Work
“How about I take you to meet some more kids down at the daycare while your mom goes back to work?” Amelia offered. As Amelia looked at Addison, she saw her mouth the words “thank you”.
“I’ve gotta go back to work but I will see you later, okay? And when I do, you better be done with all your homework that I know your dad made you bring this weekend,” Addison looked at Jake as she added that last part.
“Okay,” Henry said. He wished he could stay with his mom but he knew she had to work. Plus, he did, admittedly, have homework to finish. Meanwhile, Jake stood there and realized he’d probably take Henry down to the daycare and then figure out what to do from there. Addison was about to leave but after seeing Jake stand there, dumbfounded, she had an idea.
“Actually, why don’t you come with me, hon?” Addison looked to Jake.
“Sure,” he said back nonchalantly. While he tried to keep his cool, he was grateful that he didn’t have to wander around the hospital or the city alone.
Additional Notes
After seeing Addison meet Meredith’s kids, I wanted Meredith to meet Jake and Henry. Eventually, I’ll add in an update on Private Practice characters and a scene where Addison finally meets Scout. I haven’t gotten there yet but I have some ideas on how that could happen. Also, I wanted there to be something in OB to see Addison, Jo, and Carina working together.
